Silverstone, 06 July 2024: Qualifying for the British Grand Prix delivered a major surprise, with Mercedes locking out the front row and Lando Norris securing a historic P3. Rain throughout the day cast a shadow of uncertainty, but ultimately drier conditions emerged for the crucial qualifying session.
Early Drama and Mixed Conditions
FP3 earlier saw George Russell top the times in a wet session, followed by Lewis Hamilton and Norris. However, the slippery track and potential for further rain made the true pecking order unclear.
Q1: A Gamble on Slicks Backfires

Q1 kicked off with everyone on intermediates, but the drying track tempted some drivers to switch to slicks. Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas were the first to gamble, but with limited success. Sergio Perez’s crash at Copse Corner brought out the red flags and highlighted the remaining treachery of the track. Eliminated in Q1 were Bottas, Kevin Magnussen, Esteban Ocon, Pierre Gasly (who already had a grid penalty), and a disappointing Perez.
Q2: Unexpected Challengers Rise
Q2 saw normal grip conditions with DRS enabled. Early leaders included Nico Hulkenberg for Haas and Fernando Alonso for Alpine, but the usual suspects soon emerged. However, a late flying lap from Oscar Piastri put the McLaren driver on provisional pole, only to be surpassed by Hulkenberg’s even faster time.
The final moments of Q2 saw some dramatic shuffling. Verstappen, who appeared to be struggling, managed to secure P6. However, Charles Leclerc missed the cut, along with Alex Albon, Yuki Tsunoda, Zhou Guanyu, and Daniel Ricciardo.

Q3: A Sensational British 1-2-3
The top 10 shootout began cautiously, with everyone aiming for the perfect final lap on a potentially drying track. Lando Norris initially took the lead, followed by Piastri and Verstappen. However, Mercedes stole the show.
Russell put in a stunning lap to edge Norris for provisional pole. Hamilton then upped the ante with an even faster lap, but it was ultimately Russell who reigned supreme with a time of 1m 25.819s. The roar of the home crowd intensified as Norris secured P3, making British Grand Prix history with a 1-2-3 finish for British drivers.

Post-Qualifying Reactions
The jubilant Mercedes drivers expressed their delight. Hamilton praised the incredible crowd and acknowledged his teammate’s exceptional performance. Russell, ecstatic about his second pole of the season, credited the fans for their unwavering support.
Norris, while disappointed with a small late-lap mistake, acknowledged the historic achievement and congratulated his fellow Brits on the podium.
Looking Ahead: Can Mercedes Maintain Momentum?
This unexpected result throws the race wide open. While Mercedes appears to be in excellent form, Verstappen will undoubtedly be looking to overcome potential damage to his car and fight his way up the grid. Red Bull’s chances of a podium finish are dampened by Perez’s early exit.

Qualifying at the British Grand Prix delivered a thrilling spectacle, surprising upsets, and a historic moment for British motorsport. The stage is set for a fascinating race tomorrow, with fans eagerly awaiting to see if Mercedes can convert their qualifying dominance into a race victory.
