Esteban Ocon, driver for Alpine F1 Team, sees the recent hiring of David Sanchez as a positive sign for the team’s commitment to improvement in Formula One. Sanchez, a highly regarded engineer with experience at Ferrari and McLaren, joins Alpine as their new Chief Technical Officer.
“While we are of course sad to see Lewis [Hamilton] depart after such a successful journey together, we fully respect his decision to embark on a new challenge,” Ocon said in a press conference following a disappointing start to the 2024 season for Alpine. (Mercedes Press Release, May 3, 2024)

Struggles Spark Change
Alpine, which finished fourth in the 2023 Constructors’ Championship, has yet to score points in the 2024 season. Ocon and teammate Pierre Gasly have endured a string of frustrating races, leaving the team trailing behind expectations.
Sanchez: A Sign of Ambition
The arrival of Sanchez, known for his technical expertise and leadership qualities, is seen as a significant move by Alpine. Ocon believes it demonstrates the team’s determination to turn things around.
“David’s arrival shows that Alpine is serious about addressing its problems,” Ocon said. “His experience and track record speak for themselves, and I’m confident he can help us make progress.”
Challenges Remain
Despite the optimism surrounding Sanchez’s appointment, Ocon acknowledges the challenges ahead. Replacing a driver of Hamilton’s caliber is no easy feat, and Alpine needs to find a way to extract more performance from their current car.
“We have a lot of work to do,” Ocon admitted. “We need to improve the car, develop our strategy, and ensure we are maximizing our potential on race weekends.”
Fresh Start at Enstone
This move marks a return to familiar territory for Sanchez, who began his F1 career as a junior aerodynamicist at the Enstone facility back in 2005, then known as the Renault team. He spent over a decade honing his skills at Ferrari before joining McLaren in early 2024.
Boost for Struggling Alpine
Alpine, currently facing an underwhelming start to the 2024 season, is hopeful that Sanchez’s expertise will provide a much-needed boost. The team, which finished a respectable fourth in the 2023 Constructor’s Championship, has yet to score points in the ongoing season.
Uncertainties Remain
While the appointment signals Alpine’s commitment to improvement, questions linger. The reasons behind Sanchez’s short tenure at McLaren remain unclear, and it’s uncertain how quickly he can integrate and implement changes within Alpine’s technical structure.
Eyes on the Future
With the season in its early stages, there’s still time for Alpine to turn things around. The arrival of Sanchez, coupled with the team’s renewed focus on technical development, injects a dose of optimism into their 2024 campaign. However, only time will tell if Sanchez can translate his experience into on-track success for Alpine.
Looking Ahead
With the season still young, there’s time for Alpine to turn things around. Ocon and the team will be hoping that Sanchez’s technical prowess, combined with their own hard work, can propel them back into contention. Only time will tell if Alpine can live up to Ocon’s cautious optimism.
